Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools ProgrammeAviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme

This season sees the launch of the exciting new Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme, an initiative that will introduce over 36,000 young people to the sport through tag rugby.

The scheme is run by Premiership Rugby and the 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs up and down the country and is expected to involve 600 primary schools with 1,200 teachers also receiving training. 600 sets of equipment and resources will be distributed and 300,000 spectators are expected to watch demonstration events.

The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme is aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils aged 9 and 10 years. Each Premiership Rugby club will work with two classes at 50 schools.

The Aviva Premiership Rugby Schools Programme involves a six week introduction to rugby:

Week 1-3: Skill development and learning the rules
Week 3-5: Skill development and team skills
Week 6: Festival

The tag rugby festival in week six will be the first taste of competitive rugby for many children and will allow schools that are new to rugby to participate in a fun tag rugby festival with schools of a similar standard.

One school from each Premiership Rugby club region will qualify for the Finals at Twickenham on Aviva Premiership Rugby Final day where they will represent their Premiership Rugby club.

Tackling Numbers is an interactive numeracy programme for young children, developed and delivered by Premiership Rugby in partnership with MBNA. This five week programme aims to teach 8-9 year olds the importance of number skills in everyday life.

The Rugby themed programme will be delivered in schools by representatives from all 12 premiership league clubs, through both classroom sessions and practical number-based rugby games.

This innovative and engaging programme will make learning about numbers fun, exciting and rewarding. It will inspire children to both improve their numeracy skills and their physical health.

Land Rover Cup
Land Rover continue their drive to support grassroots rugby through the Gloucester Rugby Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup

Fast approaching is the Gloucester Rugby Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup, which provides local Under 11 and Under 12 teams with the opportunity to get involved in one of the country's leading grassroots tournaments. Participating players at the festival also get the chance to meet some of the Gloucester Rugby players who will be supporting the teams and offering some coaching tips in between games. The winning sides will embark on the Land Rover Parade of Champions at half-time of the Aviva Premiership Rugby final in May.

Land Rover Ambassador and Gloucester Coach, Carl Hogg, encourages local teams to get involved, "We all had to start playing somewhere, and most rugby players have great memories of playing at grassroots festivals as young kids. Festivals such as the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup are well run and give the players attending a fantastic opportunity to be a part of a national tournament, and also the chance to win some silverware early on in their playing days! Some of my best memories are from playing for my local club with my mates as a junior, so it's crucial that companies such as Land Rover continue to support the game at this level and organise such outstanding festivals."

Rugby is continuing to thrive at the grassroots level of the game, and this is thanks in some part to company's such as Land Rover. Two years ago Land Rover, in conjunction with Premiership Rugby, launched the Land Rover Premiership Rugby Cup, a national grassroots tournament for Under 11 and Under 12 teams. Since the inception of these tournaments, 14,000 children have taken part from all over the country. So support the young stars of your local clubs, who are all battling it out for regional recognition and also for an incredible prize - to be applauded by an 81,000 sell-out crowd at the home of English rugby - Twickenham.

ChildLine and Aviva Premiership Rugby Players Unite To Kick Bullying Into Touch

Star players from Aviva Premiership Rugby have joined forces with the NSPCC to help tackle bullying.

Funds raised by a special Premiership Rugby charity weekend and a gala dinner are being employed so that boys and girls aged 6 to 11 years in 120 schools across England can take part in a specially devised rugby programme  called Kicking Bullying Into Touch, run jointly by the Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs and the NSPCC.

The Kicking Bullying Into Touch programme, now into its third season,  uses the sport of rugby to explain what bullying is, why it is wrong and how to stop it, demonstrating that rugby is a sport that thrives on diversity where many different types of people come together to create a successful team.

Each of the 12 Aviva Premiership Rugby clubs has a NSPCC ambassador this season including Dave Attwood (Bath Rugby), Haydn Thomas (Exeter Chiefs),  Alex Brown (Gloucester Rugby), Joe Marler (Harlequins), Jordan Crane (Leicester Tigers), Alex Corbisiero (London Irish), Christian Wade (London Wasps), Jeremy Manning (Newcastle Falcons), Dylan Hartley (Northampton Saints), James Gaskell (Sale Sharks), Brad Barritt(Saracens) and Neil Best (Worcester Warriors).

Saracens player Brad Barritt said: Children can get singled out and experience bullying at any age.  No one should have to put up with being bullied and the Kicking Bullying Into Touch campaign hopes to continue to make giant strides into educating children about something that can make lives a misery if not tackled.  As part of the team at Saracens we acknowledge that we all need each other and while everyone is different we need to play to each others strengths and work together to achieve a winning result.

Founder and President of ChildLine, Esther Rantzen, said: "Bullying can devastate children's lives and it's vital that all children know bullying is wrong and how to get help if it happens to them. Taking part in sport like rugby can build teamwork skills and respect for others.

Wayne Morris, Head of Community at Premiership Rugby, said: "The Kicking Bullying Into Touch programme is a great way for us to use our unique assets, namely our club brands and players, to tackle an issue that is very high on the government's agenda. Rugby thrives on its diversity, where all different types of people come together to create a successful team. By using some of the key skills in the game, within the inclusive environment rugby generates, we believe the programme will make a real difference to the lives of young children."
