Players are selected for assessments which take place at centres throughout the county. On selection players are then invited to take part in a series of development sessions throughout the season.
The players are continually assessed on their ability and attitude with the use of the latest technology available which; will enable Gloucester Rugby to provide each player with the best development sessions in terms of reaching their maximum potential.
The programme provides specific training, sports science and conditioning sessions for selected players and includes practical coaching on core rugby skills and key performance workshops. Players will continue to play and train with their clubs, as well as representing their county if selected.
The selection criteria is split into 3 areas:
Attitude
Work rate, commitment, ability to learn, mental toughness
Athletic Potential
Speed, strength, power, body type
Rugby Ability
Core skills Handling, Running, Continuity and Defence (technical & tactical skills).
The other element to consider is "potential", the process is looking to identify and select players with the potential to become part of the Elite Player Development Centre at the age of 15. This may result in less able rugby players being selected as they have greater athletic potential or the smaller more skilful player selected over a player that may have physically matured earlier.
