Playing for Success

A School Within a Stadium

Playing for SuccessPlaying for Success at Gloucester Rugby is one of the UK’s leading study support centres. The centre is located in the brand new redeveloped south stand at the historic Kingsholm ground. Playing for Success uses the power of professional sport to inspire and excite children and young people about learning. Our state of the art facilities offer schools across the city the opportunity to engage in out of school hours educational programmes that aim to build confidence and motivation to learn.

Playing for Success is a partnership between Gloucester Rugby, Gloucestershire County Council and the Department for Children, Schools and Families. The project is part of a national initiative aimed at increasing high quality study support provision to children and young people across the country. There are 162 centres across the UK, all based in high profile sporting venues.

The centre takes a multi sensory approach to teaching and learning to ensure that all students learning styles are catered for. Students who participate in the programme can expect to do activities such as pod-casting, stop motion animation, music making, team challenges and problem solving games as well as receive behind the scenes tours of the ground, a short coaching session and even get the opportunity to meet professional rugby players.

Playing for SuccessThe centre works with Gloucester Rugby and Gloucestershire County Council to identify schools that would most benefit from this opportunity. Playing for Success specifically targets students in Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 (that’s 9 to 13 year olds!) to take part in the scheme. Each school that is invited to take part in the course is given 20 hours of provision spread over a six-week period.

Playing for Success passionately believes in young people’s ability to achieve, whether that be on the rugby pitch or in the classroom. Children and Young People need to be given the opportunity to believe in their own ability, something that we call ‘Personal Best Always’. We try to ensure that this ethos is something that our students can transfer back into the classroom or on the sports field.

Volunteering

Playing for Success also provides volunteering opportunities for local residents and passionate rugby fans. The centre has a number of placements available with roles which involve working directly with children and young people through to vital behind the scenes support such as updating the website or even taking responsibility for managing content on our very own television channel.

If you would like to put something back into your community or share your passion for rugby with others then get in touch.
