The project set out to improve the confidence, fitness and self esteem of identified young people who have become disaffected and to assist them back into further education, training or employment. It involves attending a day per week, 6 week course at Kingsholm and includes sessions on sports leadership, health and lifestyle management and team building activities led by the Army's Rifles Regiment.
The pilot scheme proved hugely successful. All of the young people completed the course and exceeded expectations. As a result the project received a Parliamentary Award for Innovation.
A number of the young people who took part progressed into further education, others were successful in gaining employment, while some were inspired to seek a career in the Armed Services.
The challenge, having delivered such a hugely successful pilot, was to see the project continue and grow the provision so that many more young people could benefit. Wooden Spoon who have been instrumental in helping shape, develop and deliver this fantastic project continue to offer support, while others including the clubs main sponsor Jewson have added backing to the project.
