It would be interesting to give the result of the first season but unfortunately no records was kept of the team's doings. This much however is known, that the first balance sheet showed that there were 35 members and the total receipts for the season from all sources were £11.
Mr Hartley retained the captaincy for two seasons, when he handed over the position to Mr J.F.Brown. To this gentlemen, Gloucester is practically indebted for the proud position the Club holds in the rugby football world.
Mr Brown was a born leader and thanks to his great enthusiasm and abilities as a player the game made rapid strides in popularity. As to the results obtained in this period, no particulars are to be found, but in 1879-80 the record showed that 16 matches were played of which 14 were won.
From the time of launching of the club in 1874, the matches were played regularly at the Spa. In February 1876, a regrettable incident occurred, Mr Sydney Lane sustaining a bad fracture of the thigh. Taking place in the early history of football in Gloucester, the occurrence had a serious effect on the attendance for some time, the ladies particularly absenting themselves from the matches.
The principal fixtures at this time were with Hereford, Ross, Rocklease, Bristol, Swindon Rangers, Cheltenham, White Cross and Clifton. The latter club in those days were an organisation to be reckoned with, was not until 1882-3 that Gloucester succeeded in beating their opponents. Since then, however, the Cliftonians have badly deteriorated and at the present time are quite a distant way from where they were.
Among the players who took part in the earlier matches of the City Club were, W.Hobbs, P.Barrett Cooke, H.J.Boughton, G.J.Dewey, E.T.Gardon, J.W.Bayley, H.J.Berry, W.S.Beaumont and L and R Grist.
