After 9 months of fundraising and nearly 24 hours travelling, the team which included staff from the Community department and 6 students from Churchdown Academy made it to their final destination - The Fold children's home in Limpopo, South Africa. This was where the challenge really began.
Helen Chu, a member of the Community team explains:
"On arrival we were greeted by the children and the house mothers and shown to our 'home' for the next week. As soon as we had unloaded all of our kit we wasted no time getting out onto the ground that was to be transformed into the multi-purpose playing area to size up the job in hand".
"Within a short timeframe the team worked hard, determined to finish the job on time. The hard work paid off as the children got to enjoy a game of netball on our last day at the orphanage. The delight on their faces made it all worthwhile".
As well as working on the sports ground, the team got to interact with the children and forge strong links with the staff there so that the relationship between the two groups could be continued into the future.
Helen said "It was a humbling experience that none of us will forget".
The Community department would like to thank everyone involved in making the challenge successful including Fleet who kindly donated the equipment needed to carry out the work.
