"We showed a lot of character," Cornwell said. "At 14-0 down after two minutes we required a lot of belief and when we got into the game we were dangerous.
"But at any level you cannot just sit in and expect something to happen for you and we did that in the first half. In the second half we reacted well and put together a good performance.
"The result speaks for itself and although there are obviously areas we can improve on, it was another really positive result for us."
The home side couldn't have asked for a better start to the game having crossed the line twice in the first two minutes. Straight from the kick off, a fumble allowed Sarries to regather the ball and Dan Scarbrough wriggled his way through several tackles to score under the posts. Alex Goode converted.
Then a minute later, a terrific break from Don Barrell from inside his own 22 started a flowing move from the Saracens backs before it was finished off by Jackson Wray in the corner. Goode added the extras again as the watching 300 spectators barely had time to draw breath.
Ryan Lamb reduced the arrears with an 11th minute penalty but Goode replied with two kicks of his own midway through the half.
Dan Norton crashed over for a try for the visitors on 35 minutes but another Goode penalty just before the interval looked to have given the home side a 12 point advantage at half time. However, Gloucester kept battling until the closing seconds of the half and that paid dividends when Henry Trinder got on the end of a cross-pitch move. Lamb converted to make it 23-15 at the break.
It was a different story after the break. Goode did get the first points of the half with a penalty and the game was pretty even until Andres Pretorius barged his way over in the corner on 67 minutes and replacement Tristan Roberts - who had come on for Lamb 10 minutes earlier - struck a sweet conversion.
Freddie Burns slipped through two tackles eight minutes from time and when Roberts added the conversion, it gave the visitors a 29-26 lead to set up an exciting last few minutes. But it was the visitors who went on to score again as Apo Satala used his strength to crash over and Roberts converted.
