The grandson of the great commentator Bill McLaren and son of former Scottish international Alan, Lawson's expert passing qualities, astute kicking game and ultra reliability has firmly established himself in Dean Ryan's squad at Kingsholm despite competition from Welsh international Gareth Cooper and Mike Prendergast.
Lawson (26) has made 44 appearances in all competitions since his debut last season and has scored nine tries. "Moving to Gloucester reinvigorated my career," he said. "It was a step into the unknown when I left Edinburgh but it has proved a great opportunity for me, has enhanced my skills and allowed me to work with some of the best players and coaches in the country.
"I have been able to play and that is the most important factor. Being able to put together a run of games has speeded up my development and working alongside a guy of Bryan Redpath's quality has been a fantastic experience.
"I am delighted to commit my long-term future to Gloucester - we are a massively ambitious club, are desperate to progress what we have already achieved over the last two seasons and I want to play my full part in that.
"Being part of such a great squad made my decision easy. I am working at my game all the time and I feel I am in the best environment to achieve that at Gloucester."
Gloucester's head coach Dean Ryan, added: "Rory came to Gloucester searching for more consistent exposure at the top level and through his hard work, understanding of what we wanted from him and dedication has developed into one of the most consistent scrum-halves in the Premiership.
"Rory is a fantastic professional and is the sort of individual we want at this club. He takes a great deal of pride in his work and we are delighted to have secured him for another two years because I am sure he would have generated interest elsewhere.
"He has a great working relationship with Bryan Redpath and I am sure there is even more to come from him - not just with Gloucester but also on the international stage because his level of performances has been that good for us this season."
