The pitch itself has been covered and heated but the freezing weather conditions in the North West and the effect on the surrounding areas mean that it would not be safe to stage the fixture.
Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premiership Rugby said today:
"The pitch protection system has worked very well at Edgeley Park and the pitch is in great condition."
"However, the surrounding areas are a problem and with more snow forecast this evening, the likelihood of the match going ahead was very slight."
"Travel in the area is not easy, so we have taken the decision to postpone the match and save a wasted trip for supporters, players and the media, including Sky Sports who were due to televise the match live."
The date and time of the rearranged fixture will be communicated as soon as possible.
