But Balding is already targeting a comeback and hopes to resume running and weight training in only two weeks. "I don't want to dwell on what has happened and I have already looked ahead to running and weight training in two weeks," he told www.gloucesterrugby.co.uk.
"I believe these things happen for a reason and I will stay positive and aim to come back fitter and stronger. I will have an operation on Wednesday and then look forward to starting my recovery.
"But I will stay involved, help with the analysis and look to play my part. We have said all along this is a squad game and I would like to think anyone in my position would want to do the same.
"We play in a contact sport and injuries do happen - I have just got to remain upbeat about the future. It is frustrating but there is nothing I can do now."
