Understandably, he's delighted at the prospect of returning to playing action in a game which has added significance for him as an individual as the fixture is a joint testimonial game for himself and team mate Alex Brown.
The 29 year old Swindon born prop has done all the hard work in training but the return to competitive action is a big step, one that he admits that he's relishing.
"You can do as much training as you want and I get a bit more confident after every contact and scrum session I do.
"But until I get out there and actually play and test it in a fully live situation, I won't be satisfied.
"I'm looking forward to it. I think I'm good to go so let's hope that the game on Saturday backs it up."
The Cardiff fixture kicks off testimonial proceedings for the long serving pair and Wood admits that he finds it puzzling sometimes where the time has gone.
"It's flown by. I started here when I was 18 and played first team at 20 and, to still be going here at my only club, is pretty special.
"I know how hard Browny's committee and my committee have been working for us and it's just fantastic that the game is almost upon us and that the year is about to kick off."
And the Cardiff clash itself promises to be a stern test for Gloucester as they step up their preseason preparations, a fact not lost upon Wood.
"There's been a bit of history between us in recent years. It might be a preseason friendly but, come 3pm on Saturday, there will be nothing friendly about it!"
