Nina Bartlett, Fundraising Events Officer, from National Star College explains why they are taking part in the 'Road to 2015':
Enabling people with disabilities to reach their potential is what the National Star charity is all about.
Everyone is unique. We all want to be active citizens in control of our lives. National Star works with people with severe disabilities and acquired brain injuries to help them gain that control and reach their potential.
This is achieved through personalised learning, comprehensive therapies, to help speech and movement, and preparation to make the transition into the adult world.
National Star is thrilled to be part of the Road to 2015. Julian Ralph, a sports tutor at National Star, which is based outside Cheltenham, feels that "being involved in the walk is a fantastic opportunity to support the build up to the Rugby World Cup 2015 and to celebrate the fact that it is coming to Gloucester".
We hope that, by participating in this walk, we will raise vital funds for our charity, whilst supporting Gloucester Rugby CIC. We recognise how important sport is in the community and this is why we want to support this great initiative.
The sports programme at National Star is incredibly popular and important. It plays a crucial role in helping students to gain independence and realise their ambitions.
Nathan is studying a BTEC Level 2 in sport. He has cerebral palsy and says he has gained confidence through his sports experiences at National Star. He says: "I couldn't get involved that much with sport at my secondary school but here, at National Star, the sports department is amazing. They get everyone involved, even if they have a disability that might hold them back."
Thanks to the necessary skills he is acquiring at National Star, Nathan hopes to coach sport to children.
The funds raised by participating in the Road to 2015 will help us to continue to work with students, like Nathan, and to support them to lead independent lives and reach their potential.
