Since making his club debut in 2001, Barkley established himself as the cornerstone of Bath’s backline, amassing 1538 points in 164 appearances.
The 26-year-old was a key man on England’s summer tour to New Zealand and was nominated for the Premiership Golden Boot award in 2006/07 following a personal haul of 264 points and was a member of England’s 2007 World Cup squad.
The former Bath play-maker was one of Gloucester’s four major summer signings in 2008. A hugely gifted play-maker, Barkley is able to play at either 10 or 12 and that versatility was key to Gloucester in the 208-9 season.
A thudding defender and willing to engage the defensive line, Barkley signed for Gloucester on a two-year contract and joined up at Kingsholm in July 2008 with former Bath team-mates Gareth Delve, Mike Tindall and Iain Balshaw.
However, at the end of the 2008-9 season, it was announced that Barkley would be returning to Bath for the 2009-10 season after only one season with Gloucester.
