Gloucester Rugby U18s name side for final Academy League pool clash in Devon
8 February 2019
Gloucester Rugby U18s are on the road again this weekend, making the trip to Devon to take on their Exeter Chiefs counterparts at Callywith College (KO 2pm)
After picking up a pair of bonus points on the road last time out in defeat at London Irish, the young Cherry and White side will be looking to bounce back, targeting a spot in the Academy League final after dropping into second spot behind Bath Rugby.
Sitting level on points with Bath, the Cherry and Whites will be aiming to pick up the better result, with Bath hosting London Irish this weekend.
Louis Rees-Zammit, a hat trick scorer last week at Hazelwoods reverts into the outside centre jersey this weekend, joined by playmaker Tommy Matthews who is introduced. George Barton is joined by Harry Gipson at half back.
Up front, Leyton Chambers and Marcus Reading come in to the starting line-up, with Archie Benson and Freddie Thomas lining up in the second row. Harry Taylor comes into the back row alongside captain Joe Howard and number eight Jack Clement.
Junior Academy Manager Alex Guest previewed this weekend’s fixture.
“We had a disappointing result against Irish last weekend but all credit to them, they were an excellent team on the day. Not quite being at the races in this league makes it tough to get the results.
“Looking ahead to Exeter Chiefs, they will be a similar team to London Irish. Gunning for us and looking to move up the pool standings with an eye on Finals Day themselves.
“A long journey ahead but nothing the boys aren’t used to after travelling to Scarlets and Ospreys during this season to play.
“We want the boys to be tested. We’ve got an excellent group of players who have worked hard and committed a lot of time to the programme. We want them to be successful as a team and individuals but you only get that by testing yourself against the best in tough situations and Chiefs away is a great opportunity to do this.
“The boys have had a good week. Some excellent reflections at the start of the week and they’ve made a clear plan for Saturday. We’ll have to wait and see what happens”
