Francesca Sberna was a relatively late starter in rugby terms, only taking up the game at the age of 18. She’s made up for lost time since, representing Italy at international level and now joining Gloucester-Hartpury to test herself at Tyrrells Premier 15s level.
She quickly fell in love with the game and, training hard to improve her game, was playing at regional level within a year.
She played for Calvisano Rugby and then moved to Rugby Colorno, in Serie A. Francesca played there for 5 seasons and won the championship as well as earning selection for the Italy national 7s team for the Grand Prix Series and then for the Italy national union team to compete in several test matches first, and then in the Six Nations Championship.
She acknowledges that it’s been hard work, but that it’s been a rewarding time and she’s still hoping to challenge herself and improve even more.
“It’s been some very rewarding but challenging years, between work, a serious injury and many hardships but everything I learned thanks to rugby has made me a better, stronger and more self-aware person.
“The past 2 years have been very important to me and I want to keep getting better, I’m here to learn and challenge myself!”
