Gloucester Rugby endured a tough afternoon at the Ricoh Arena against Wasps as, despite scoring a try scoring bonus point, the hosts were simply too strong and good value for their 39-22 Gallagher Premiership victory.

Despite some bright moments on the day, the Cherry and Whites saw Wasps ruthlessly exploit any errors they made and, despite battling right up until the very last minute, left themselves with simply too much to do to catch up.

Things started badly as Jack Willis picked off a Callum Braley pass and galloped 50 metres for the game’s opening try. Jimmy Gopperth converted and Dan Robson extended the lead with an opportune drop goal.

Gloucester Rugby tried to get back into the game, and there were some half chances, but they failed to take advantage of a yellow card issued to Malakai Fekitoa. The All Black took one for the team and they repaid him by scoring 12 unanswered points in his absence.

The Cherry and Whites scored two fine tries from Tom Marshall and Ollie Thorley to give themselves a glimmer of hope, but Marshall was sinbinned on the stroke of half time and Nizaam Carr promptly secured the try scoring bonus point and a 29-10 lead at the break.

Second half tries from Billy Twelvetrees and Lloyd Evans, either side of one for Fekitoa, made sure that Gloucester Rugby got something out of the game. But Wasps had the last word as Gopperth rounded off the scoring with a 62^nd minute penalty as both teams had chances in the final quarter without crossing the whitewash.
