An inspirational student from Gloucester was among the four winners honoured on Tuesday evening at the annual HITZ Awards.

Always a highlight of the Premiership Rugby calendar, the achievements of 12 outstanding individuals were recognised at the emotional ceremony, hosted by former England and London Irish Winger Topsy Ojo, and attended by professional players and community staff from across the Premiership.

Gloucester Rugby’s Fallan Barlow was presented with the Academic Achiever Award, supported by Central YMCA.

The award recognises the pathway a learner has taken since joining the HITZ programme and how far they have travelled in their journey.

Fallan, who was diagnosed with ADHD, experienced difficult times in her schooling and, compounded by an unstable home environment, found herself at rock bottom. At her lowest, and with the help of support workers, she was introduced to an alternative educational environment of the HITZ programme.

At HITZ, her ADHD behaviours were managed and supported, with coping mechanisms put in place. With a proper diagnosis and the right medication, Fallan grew more determined to turn her life around. She formed positive and healthy relationships with others, her engagement in the programme blossomed and consequently, her mental health improved.

Fallan’s commitment, loyalty and character during the programme led to gaining qualifications, and securing part-time employment to further her career.
