Gloucester Rugby were represented by four players on the international stage this weekend. Louis Rees-Zammit and Stephen Varney continued to impress early on in their international careers with Jonny May and Matias Alemanno continuing their consistency at the highest level.

Jonny May

The speedy winger was up against his clubmate Louis Rees-Zammit and they both played well when Wales hosted England at the Parc y Scarlets.

It was May’s side who were victorious with tries from Mako Vunipola and Henry Slade helping England secure the 24-13 win over their rivals.

Jonny May’s work rate was relentless, and he was constantly coming off his wing looking to find a gap and burst through.

Louis Rees-Zammit

The 19-year-old Welshman is getting used to international rugby now and made his second start for his country against England last weekend.

Rees-Zammit played more of a defensive role than he did in his try scoring debut last time out and the highlight of his game was when he used his pace to make a try saving tackle on British and Irish Lion Anthony Watson.

It was a much-improved Wales side who have struggled recently, and they will take some confidence into their final game of the tournament against Italy next weekend.

Stephen Varney

The scrum-half came on in the second half in Italy’s 36-5 loss to France but wasn’t given enough time to make his mark on the game.

He did bring some excitement and energy when he took to the field but it was too little too late for Italy who’s defence had leaked five tries.

Varney will hope for more game time next weekend and will relish the opportunity to play against Wales if he is picked.

Matias Alemanno

The second row came on in the second half in what was a tough game for Argentina against an All Blacks side who were desperate to bounce back and prove that their recent results were only a blip.

It was a 38-0 victory for New Zealand and one to forget quickly for Argentina who will have the opportunity to bounce back when they face Australia next Saturday in The Rugby Championship.
