Gloucester Rugby scored a number of good tries against Bath Rugby in last Friday’s Premiership Rugby clash, but Jacob Morris’ effort was the pick of the bunch and enough to see him win the 1873 Club Outstanding Moment.

Following the game Jacob came into the Abbey Business Lounge alongside team mates Tom Seabrook and Harry Butler, and took part in the post match Q&A for 1873 Club Members, hosted by former Gloucester back row forward Simon Devereux.

Jacob was then presented with the award by Devs, who provided the following match summary.

“Gloucester will be encouraged by the opening quarter where the young side showed pace, alertness and precision to open up a 24 point lead. However, to eventually lose 24-26 against a Bath side which flourished as the match wore on, will have left a bitter taste.

“Gloucester’s scrum was solid during the opening period against an experienced Bath front row. The forwards looked sharper than their opponents at the breakdown and Gloucester’s pacey back line punished Bath at will, ensuring a four try bonus point was secured moving into the second quarter.

“Gloucester were dominating territorially with a 24 point lead until they were dismantled on their own put in at an attacking scrum on the Bath ‘22’. This proved a key moment as the resulting penalty enabled Bath to quickly generate field position and register their first try from strong driving lineout play.

“Gloucester again struggled to deal with the Bath driving lineout for their second try on half time. Bath were galvanized by this period of play on the half time whistle.

“A mix up in communication enabled Bath to run in an interception which brought them to within five points and seemed to set alarm bells ringing in the Gloucester play. Bath dominated the scrum and also lineout, where Gloucester struggled to cope with the Bath driving play. Bath used their driving lineout to good effect again to take the lead in the final quarter.

“It felt that one more Gloucester score would be enough to change the momentum of the game but poor lineout accuracy from several attacking positions, combined with difficulty in executing any sustained phase play, meant they were unable to register further points.

“The experience will have served as a lesson to the young players as to how important a strong set piece and precision from attacking positions are, as the squad focus now switches to a rigorous Premiership and European campaign.”
