After a gap of two years, live music returned to Kingsholm on Friday evening as Olly Murs delighted an audience of nearly 20,000 people with a performance that was full of fun, energy and quality music.

A consummate performer since he first came to the attention of the British public as a contestant on X Factor, Olly had his work cut out to lift the spirits of the crowd who were soaked by the rain which fell throughout.

And he did so in some style, even getting the crowd to join in with an impromptu version of ‘Summer Loving’ from Grease and ‘I Wanna Be Like You’ from The Jungle Book at one point.

But it was the big hits that the crowd were here for, and they sung along to every word. He’s also renowned for his crowd interaction, and didn’t disappoint on that note as he engaged in some entertaining dialogue in between songs.

The scene was set for him by an excellent opening set from Rak-Su, who actually kicked off proceedings in bright evening sunshine. However, in contrast to the good vibes coming from the support act on the stage, the weather quickly turned.

The rain came down, and the weather conditions almost called for the Kingsholm floodlights to be fired up.

But the brilliant Gloucester crowd rose to the occasion singing loudly along to George Ezra’s ‘Shotgun’ and ‘I Gotta Feeling’ by the Black Eyed Peas as the long awaited moment approached.

And boy did they make a heck of a noise as the Essex born singer, the one they’d really been waiting for, took to the stage to kick proceedings off with recent single ‘Moves’.

It was the last night of his tour, but he was showing no sign of fatigue as he kept the pace moving with a number of songs like ‘Feel the Same’, ‘You Know I Know’, ‘Maria’ and ‘You Don’t Know Love’ that the audience needed no second invitation to sing along to.

Olly even threw in a few covers for good measure – ‘Superstition’ by Stevie Wonder and ‘What Makes You Beautiful by One Direction’, again much to the delight of his adoring crowd.

The pace continued as the night wore on, and some of his bigger numbers like ‘Heart Skips a Beat’, ‘Dear Darlin’, Troublemaker’, 'Up" and ‘Dance With Me Tonight’ were gleefully lapped up.

Olly’s a great entertainer, with a terrific rapport with his fans and, despite the weather, his audience loved every minute. It will certainly go down as one of the most popular performances seen on the Kingsholm stage in a welcome return to live music at the home of Gloucester Rugby.
