James Hanson was on media duty ahead of Gloucester Rugby’s trip to Lyon in the European Champions Cup. The hooker previewed the fixture and believes it’s an “opportunity to make amends” after last week.

Lessons learnt from Harlequins

“I think the big thing that the coaches and players are frustrated about is that we had the game plan and we knew what Quins were going to do. There were no surprises and from our side the energy was there, the physicality was there it was just a few lapses in concentration where they got themselves into the game and got points.

“That’s where it works well for this week as Lyon pose a different threat but in a lot of the same ways. They are a classic French team with that French flare so if you give them a lapse in concentration it’ll covert into points so that’s been our big learning curve for this week.”

On Lyon

“It’s a classic French team where they are definitely set piece focused. They’ve got a good drill in the lineout and maul and they’re a big pack who will try and got dominance through the scrum and lineout. That along with their dangers out wide, it’s a tough ask but we’re looking forward to the challenge.”

On playing in the European Champions Cup

“It’s huge. I know there are a lot of guys looking forward to it. It’ll be a lot of the guys first games in Europe. Personally, this is one of the reasons you come up this side of the world; to play against some of the best teams in the top competition in the world.

“I’m looking forward to it and across the board individually it’s a great challenge but as a team we’ve got to take onboard those learnings from last week and it’s a great opportunity to make amends for that.”
