The Gloucester Rugby U18s were disappointed to be defeated by Saracens at the Stone X on Saturday in the academy league but claimed two points late on with a penalty try.

Saracens opened the scoring with a try through Barney Merrett, but the young Cherry & Whites responded immediately through wing, Jack Cotgreave. A conversion from captain on the day, Ioan Jones, saw Matt Teague's side take the lead.

But two tries from the hosts saw them take a 17-7 lead into the break.

The Cherry & Whites came out of the blocks firing thanks to a Sam Loftus try just three minutes into the second period. Jones added his second conversion of the afternoon.

A double from Sarries' Joe Robinson seemed to have put the home side out of site with fifty minutes on the clock. But, second-row Bart Godsell crashed over to give the visitors a glimmer of hope as the clock approached the hour mark.

However, Dylan Enskat put the game beyond any doubt when he crossed for Saracens' sixth try.

Matt Teague's side didn't leave the Stone X empty-handed though, a late penalty try ensured they came away with two bonus points.

Teague was disappointed his side couldn't offer more of a challenge to Saracens, but is excited for their West Country derby at Bath this week.

"It was disappointing to not come away with more than the two points, with our line-out not giving us a decent foothold or platform into the game that we would of hoped.

"We have Bath away this week and it will be another great challenge for us as we try to finish on a high as we head towards the Premiership Under 18s Finals Day in 2 weeks time."
