Gloucester Rugby secure Challenge Cup quarter-final with 31-21 win over Northampton

Gloucester Rugby defeated Northampton Saints 31-21 in the Challenge Cup Round of 16 at Kingsholm on Saturday evening.

What happened?

Gloucester Rugby took a 21-14 lead into the break after tries from Ollie Thorley, Val Rapava-Ruskin and Matias Alemanno with Adam Hastings adding the extras each time.

Having led 21-0 at one point, the Cherry and Whites slipped a few times in defence, letting Juarno Augustus and Rory Hutchinson in for scores. Dan Biggar kicked both conversions to keep the visitors in the hunt.

In the second half, Gloucester Rugby started as they meant to go on with Santiago Socino getting over for maul try.

Dan Biggar was shown a red card for a high hit on Chris Harris and Hastings continued his impressive 100% accuracy from the tee by slotting a penalty.

However, Saints were able to hit back and Mike Haywood wrestled over for a Northampton try.

Gloucester Rugby held on and took the win which ses the Cherry and Whites progress in the European competition.

Key moment – Ollie Thorley try

Man of the match, Ollie Thorley, was first to get on the scoreboard. The winger collected the ball and refused to be brought down, running relentlessly through the Saints defence until he made it over the line.

What’s next?

Gloucester Rugby are back in Gallagher Premiership action next Friday night when the Cherry and Whites travel to Ashton Gate to take on Bristol Bears.
