Gloucester Rugby secure Prem Cup semi-final with bonus point win over Bristol

(c) Martin Bennett / Gloucester Rugby

Gloucester Rugby booked a place in the Premiership Rugby Cup semi-final with a 43-15 win over Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate.

The result means we will host Worcester Warriors in the semi-final at Kingsholm at the end of April (date TBC).

What happened?

A young Cherry and White side scored six tries in a dominant performance at Ashton Gate.

Bristol were first to open the scoring through a Jac Lloyd penalty but Gloucester Rugby scored three first half tries to go into the break with a healthy 21-3 lead.

Jake Morris opened up the scoring for Gloucester Rugby after collecting a well-placed cross field kick from George Barton. The winger handed off the defender and found his way over in the corner.

Jack Bartlett and Henry Walker proved that the driving maul is a weapon rooted within the squad with both of them getting over from short range drives.

Barton was accurate from the tee and slotted all three conversions in the first half.

In the second half, Bristol were first to strike through Bryan Byrne but Freddie Thomas soon crashed over for our bonus point score with Alex Morgan adding a great intercept try to the board.

Mitch Eadie ensured Bristol stayed in the fight and got over for a try but a second score from Henry Walker cemented the win for the Cherry and Whites with a penalty from Barton adding the final three points to make the score 43-15 at full time.

Key moment – Driving maul

The most pleasing take from the game is the fact that this youthful Gloucester Rugby side played with the same game plan as the first team. The maul was a real weapon and it is clear that the game plan is rooted in each individual playing in Cherry and White.
