Gloucester-Hartpury Women add experience to squad with signing of Erica Mills
As the Gloucester-Hartpury squad continues with its preparations for the 2019-20 Tyrrells Premier 15 squad, they have added some valuable experience with the signing of back-row forward Erica Mills.

Erica has managed to combine playing rugby in the top flight with forging a career in the Armed Forces – she is a captain in the Royal Artillery.

She didn’t actually start playing rugby until her second year of University where she was inspired to ‘give it a go’ by her housemates who were all playing for the Men’s 1st XV.

Since then she has had the privilege of playing for the British Army, UK Armed Forces, Saracens and more recently Wasps.

The physical demands of the game and the team ethos and camaraderie that surround it have had a huge influence on her career, along with the playing opportunities provided by the Army, the continued success of England and the growth of the sport as a whole.

Erica’s Army career has proved to be Gloucester-Hartpury’s gain as, moving into the area due to work has seen her opt to wear the Cherry and White in the Tyrrells Premier 15s this season as she explained.

“Being in the military, roughly every two years, we get different postings which could take us anywhere geographically. Gloucester-Hartpury is now my nearest club so I’m looking forward to the next couple of years.

“I knew Susie (Appleby) from old, and told her I was in the area and would like to come and try a preseason with Gloucester-Hartpury and see how it worked out for both parties. And that was how it all started.

“The squad are quite a young bunch, and will probably put me through my paces as one of the oldest members of the squad I would imagine! It brings a new challenge and hopefully I have some knowledge that I can impart as well as learning from them as well.

“It’s exciting coming to a new club, learning how other teams play, playing under new management and, hopefully, it’ll provide a platform for me to develop as a player in however many seasons I have left!”
