Shona Powell-Hughes says Gloucester-Hartpury are excited for Saracens challenge
Returning to the Gloucester-Hartpury starting line-up this weekend, having been a replacement against Worcester Valkyries last Saturday, is number eight Shona Powell-Hughes. And she told the club website this week that the squad are looking forward to taking on the champions.

The equivalent fixture last season produced one of the most entertaining encounters of the Tyrrells Premier 15s season, with both teams contributing to an entertaining 29-29 draw.

Saracens went on to top the table and eventually lift the title, and looked to have started this season in similarly impressive style. However, they slipped up last weekend away at Harlequins and it’s Loughborough Lightning who now occupy top spot.

That defeat shows that Saracens are beatable but, equally, there could be a reaction this weekend. It’s something that Gloucester-Hartpury are ready for says Powell-Hughes.

“Any defeat hurts really, and it’s a question of how you bounce back from it. We’re under no illusions about how tough the game up there will be.

“Every game’s a challenge to be honest, but it’s all about how we turn up on the day and I think that our preparation for Saracens has been great. We’re focusing on ourselves rather than them and, on the day, it could be anyone’s game.

“But we’ve really come together as a squad recently, implemented some of our set plays and are excited about the prospect and going into it with a positive frame of mind.”

There are plenty of big name players in the Saracens squad, but that’s no surprise says the Welsh international back-rower who feels it reflects the overall quality of the Tyrrells Premier 15s.

“They’ve got some quality players, but so does every team we face in the Tyrrells Premier 15s. And we have some good players ourselves of course. We’re looking forward to testing ourselves against them and showing what we’re capable of.

“We just need to keep our heads and implement in the game what we’ve been working on in practice. We need to stick together and work as a team, all the 22 players named in the squad.”
