Willi Heinz to continue as Gloucester Rugby captain for 2018-19 season
With the start of the Gallagher Premiership season just around the corner, Gloucester Rugby are delighted to confirm that Willi Heinz has once again been named as captain of the side.

The experienced scrum-half joined Gloucester Rugby ahead of the 2015-16 season and has gone on to clock up 63 competitive appearances in his time in Cherry and White, scoring nine tries in the process.

The former Crusader took over the Gloucester Rugby captaincy ahead of the 2017-18 season, and led with authority from the front as the team reached the European Rugby Challenge Cup Final and qualified for the Heineken Champions Cup.

Director of Rugby David Humphreys confirmed today that Heinz had proved to be an inspirational skipper last season and that the coaches are looking for more of the same from him this season.

“Willi was already one of the leaders in the squad, on and off the field, and he really grew into the role last season.

“We were delighted with the leadership role he played last season, and he was the obvious candidate to carry on this season as we look to build upon the progress we made last year.”

Speaking to the club website this week, Heinz admitted that it’s an honour to be asked to continue in the role ahead of what is shaping up to be an exciting season for the Cherry and Whites.

“I was delighted when David (Humphreys) and Johan (Ackermann) asked me to continue in the role and didn’t hesitate to say yes. I was proud to skipper such a prestigious club last season and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

“I may wear the armband on a matchday, but I’m fortunate to play in a side where there are leaders and decision-makers across the park.

“We’re all massively excited about the season ahead. We’ve recruited well, adding to a core of players who showed at times last season exactly what we’re capable of. We’re looking to play at that level consistently this season and take the club forward.”
