In an Aviva Premiership Rugby game, a kick for the posts would doubtless have been the call but scrum half Dave Lewis took the tap and Cox, spotting a prop lurking in the wide channels opposite him, was able to accelerate away for the score.
"It was quick thinking from Davey Lewis and he did the job for me to be fair, putting me into a bit of space and I was able to get through. It was great to get my first try for the club, it was a shame it was only a friendly!"
"It's part of my game, I think I scored five tries in four games up at Worcester last season so hopefully I'll get on the score sheet more often."
"I want to put my name forward to be on the team list, and hopefully the score sheet. I had a good preseason, I feel I'm in good shape so why not put my hand up?"
Cox replaced Andy Hazell at the Liberty Stadium and slotted in at openside. It's well known that he can play across the back row - which position does he prefer?
"Everyone keeps asking me this! I don't really have a favourite position, I'm just happy to get on the park. It doesn't matter to me as long as I'm in the line up or on the bench at least."
The away win was an important one in Gloucester's preseason preparations and Cox echoed Head Coach Bryan Redpath's recent words about wins on the road needing to become more frequent.
"We've got fantastic talent in the team, these boys have done a lot of things. We're trying to develop a winning mentality when it comes to away matches."
"We're trying to make Kingsholm a fortress but we definitely want to win more on the road especially after last season when we only won a couple. It's something we're working on."
Finally, Matt was asked about the team's defensive performance in the second half.
"We need to work a bit more on our defence as they got around our breakdown a little bit. So, we need to tighten up on that."
"We were under the cosh a bit in the second half as we were against the Scarlets last weekend. We couldn't get the ball back which made it tough."
"It wasn't a perfect game and I obviously haven't had a chance to review it yet but it seemed to be a step up from last week although we've still things to work on."
