Gloucester born and bred, he spent the vast majority of his playing career at Kingsholm before playing a couple of seasons for Bedford in Courage League Two. He made nearly 300 appearances in total for Gloucester.
He then served as an Assistant Coach to Philippe Saint Andre before moving on to the Worcester Warriors, who he guided into the Guinness Premiership for the first time in their history, and then down the M5 to Bristol Rugby as Forwards Coach.
He has been working with the current Gloucester Rugby coaching duo of Bryan Redpath and Carl Hogg since last December and will now move into the role of Rugby Operations Manager on a two year contract.
Reporting into Head Coach Redpath, his new role will still encompass scouting but also include contract negotiations and responsibility for playing department budgets.
Bryan Redpath told the club website today that he's delighted that Brain's involvement will increase:
"John's done a fine job for us since last December, he works well with Carl and myself. His new role will see him oversee scouting of players, contracts and budgets. That allows Carl and myself to focus on coaching and that suits us just fine!"
Brain himself is understandably excited with his new role:
"I've really enjoyed working with Bryan and Carl and everyone knows how much Gloucester means to me."
"The new role is a real challenge and one that I can't wait to get my teeth into. Gloucester have had a terrific season but everyone at the club wants to keep pushing on and that's good to see."
"I'm looking forward to playing my part in building on the recent success and helping to keep Gloucester at the pinnacle of the English club game."
