It looks drastic! However, Dave explained that the work is essential and will result in a superior playing surface.
"It's the first significant work we've done on the pitch for three years. We're looking to bring the pitch into the 21st century.
"With the irrigation and drainage work, we're currently doing, we're creating a playing surface fit for first class and, ultimately, World Cup, rugby."
As is always the case with pitch maintenance, there's a finite window of time in which to get the work done, especially bearing in mind that two concerts - McFly and Ronan Keating - are booked in for June 13th and 14th.
"We definitely need to get this first stage done in a timely fashion. The weather hasn't been great for the past few days, and we could do with it being a little bit warmer as the grass is a but slow coming through.
"But, if it warms up a bit over the next week or so, we should be ok for the concerts."
Quite a bit of work has already taken place in the past few weeks as Dave explained:
"We've installed a linear drainage system, so that there is a drain under the surface up and down the pitch every five metres.
"Then we've gone across the pitch every metre to connect those drains so water is taken off the pitch as quickly as possible, which should provide us with a dry, fast surface to play on.
"The team will get a pitch that's firmer, has more grass on it and which plays quicker. For me and my team, we can fertilize and top dress the pitch more frequently."
As many as five vehicles have been on the pitch and at any time, in a carefully co-ordinated operation.
"We awarded the contract to Fineturf from Grantham, and they turned up with a fleet of Kubota tractors and ancillary equipment.
"We've had five tractors on the pitch at times, taking the soil away so that we could put the drains in, put gravel in the drains and then back fill with rootzone.
"Also putting the irrigation pipes in around the pitch, plus the piping for the six pop up sprinklers we're installing.
"Kubota have been a partner of ours for about five years now. We've always had good service from them, and it's good to see the contractor we appointed using their machinery."
