Billy Twelvetrees relishes Sale Sharks opportunity

Gloucester Rugby travel to Sale Sharks on Saturday and ahead of the fixture, Billy Twelvetrees looked back on the Northampton win and previewed the upcoming game.

On Northampton Saints

“It was a great result for the boys. To get five points at home is massive and the fans were absolutely magnificent and there were some new combinations out there so it was brilliant to get the result. I think our resilience was massive and the forwards really stepped up and delivered in the last 30 minutes.

“It’s huge for us as a group of players and what we’re about this year.

“You’ve just got to stay in the fight and in this league, that’s what it’s all about. There are 13 teams who are incredibly good and there are going to be difficult games. We caused them some real difficult moments and they exploited us in some areas where they scored a great try and put us under a lot of pressure. We managed to stick to the process and stick to the plan and some of the boys in the tight five really shone that day.”

On Sale Sharks

“The AJ Bell is a really unique place to play and Sale are unique in the way that they play. They’re a physical team. Very structured in the way that they do things and aggressive and going away from home, it’s always one that we relish.

“We had a ding-dong battle up there last year and at home, we could have lost it with the last kick of the game here a couple of months ago. They’re a very good team and they’ve got some very good individuals. Collectively they’ve got a very good plan and really pressure teams. We’ll have to be on it.”

On the tight nature of the Premiership

“At this stage of the year, we’re aware of what the league positions are. It’s tit for tat in so many games and it’s shown throughout the Premiership season and teams are moving up and down.

“Apart from Leicester at the top who have been very clinical with their win ratio. You look at the table now and from 3rd down to 8th, it’s very close and teams are going hammer and tong.

“Picking up points is key especially away from home. Training this week has been very focused on what we’re about and we’re very excited to go up to the AJ Bell and deliver what we know we can do.”

On his testimonial season

“I’m very grateful to the club for giving me a testimonial season. We’ve got a few events coming up! The 6th of April, we have a leadership lunch with myself, Phil Vickery, Sir Ian McGeechan is coming, Tom Kerridge and we’ll deliver a package on what it’s like to be a professional athlete and a professional sportsman as well as business and everything to do with leadership and communication and delivering excellence.

“There will be a tour of the stadium and the facilities here and there will be players here to interact with so it would be great to see as many fans and business along as possible.

“The Ladies night will be an interesting one at the end of April! We play Bath at Kingsholm in the derby game and then that night all of the boys will be heading off to a hotel down the road and it will be a good fun celebration to raise funds for Winston’s Wishes and the Pied Piper appeal which are charities that are close to me and the community.

“That’s the aim of the year, to raise funds and awareness and to have a bit of fun along the way.”
