Gloucester Rugby travel to Lyon for Round 1 of the European Challenge Cup on Friday. Ahead of the game, George Skivington spoke about the recent win over Bristol and previewed the start of our European campaign.
On Bristol win
“It was a brilliant atmosphere. The Bristol game is a long standing derby and it was massively physical. The work rate was huge from both sides but on the evening we came out better and it seemed like everyone enjoyed it!”
On a new competition
“There will be a couple of different faces in certain positions and some who stay the same. It doesn’t really change anything for us. We’re very much going week by week and the boys have come in ready and we’re prepared for Lyon. We’ve had a really good training day today and we’re going to attack it like we would attack any other game.”
On players slotting in
"I think the best reference point is the Premiership Rugby Cup game against Exeter. All the young lads ran exactly the same systems and they all knew what they were doing. They train with everybody here anyway so we’re getting to a point now where we’re pretty comfortable and people can slip in and out. It’s crucial to our long term development that young lads and squad players can slot in and we’re never relying on one individual to cover a position.
"We’re comfortable making some tough selections so we can cover ourselves when players have to take breaks."
On facing Lyon
“I’m expecting a very tough game. We felt that last year when we went over. That was obviously a very convincing win for them. They are playing really well this season and they are right at the top end of their league. I expect it to be a real challenge and I expect it to be a bit hostile but in good spirit. We’ll prepare as best we can. We’ve had a good look at them and we feel that our game is coming on. It’s a really exciting challenge to go out there and have a crack at one of the best teams in France.”
Our European Challenge Cup campaign will continue against Benetton at Kingsholm on Friday 17 December. Tickets are available here.
