Gloucester-Hartpury keep afloat in Sale Shark infested waters

Sale Sharks Women 21 - 45 Gloucester-Hartpury - Report by Eden Button

For Gloucester-Hartpury’s third fixture of their Premier 15s campaign they travelled north to shark infested waters, facing Sale Sharks Women at the CorpAcq Stadium. Gloucester-Hartpury started strong and with an early penalty followed by a beautiful line out, Connie Powell had the ball over the line within the first 5-minutes. Conversion was good, taken by Emma Sing. Sale quickly got even with their first try on the 8-minute mark followed by a good conversion which set the score at 7-7.

Gloucester-Hartpury hit back with some massive carries however the opposition's defence stayed strong. After a couple penalties from both sides a maul was formed from a Gloucester-Hartpury lineout and 20 meters was gained, the maul was collapsed by Sale Sharks Women and Gloucester-Hartpury got their second lot of points on the board from a penalty try.

After some great play down the wing from Gloucester-Hartpury, a fabulous line out followed and the ball was distributed out wide for Ellie Underwood to score Gloucester-Hartpury’s third try of the game right under the sticks. Conversion was good, by Emma Sing.

To finish off the second half, Gloucester-Hartpury built pressure through phases and Zoe Aldcroft, with an insane step and palm, dove over the line to score the fourth try for Gloucester-Hartpury. Another great conversion was taken by Emma Sing. The opposition grew frustrated as they struggled to find the finishing blow they needed. This left the half time score at a 28-7 lead to Gloucester-Hartpury.

In the second half Sale Sharks Womens came back fighting however a strong scrum from Gloucester-Hartpury caused their front row to collapse under pressure , awarding another scrum penalty to the Cherry and Whites.

Following another penalty Gloucester-Hartpury took the line out and formed a fantastic driving maul, there was no stopping the pack this time and Connie Powell dropped down over the line for her second try of the match. Followed by yet again another good conversion, by Emma Sing. Taking the score to 7-35 to Gloucester-Hartpury.

Another scrum penalty to Gloucester-Hartpury in the 56th minute had the scrum reset, which was held solid by Gloucester-Hartpury’s forward pack. Bethan Lewis made an amazing pick from the scrum and passed to Emma Sing who crashed over the line bringing the score to a 40-7 Gloucester-Hartpury lead.

Quick off a restart, Ellie Underwood found the ball once again in her hands, she made an amazing run and went for the corner scoring her second try of the day. As the opposition's frustration grew so did the pressure they put on Gloucester-Hartpury, a kick to clear was chased down by Sale Sharks Women and their good attacking pressure meant they got over for their second of the match, followed by a good conversion.

In the last 6 minutes of the game Sale Sharks Women got a line out on the Gloucester-Hartpury 5m, the ball was disrupted but still ended up in the hands of the Sharks and with some big forward carries, Sale Sharks Women got over the line for their third try of the match, followed by a good conversion. With only a few minutes left we saw some great play from both sides and with a huge hit from Amy Dale that left a Sale player on the floor the final whistle was blown, ending an exciting game with a tense second half but an amazing result for Gloucester-Hartpury none the less.

Gloucester-Hartpury now get ready for a big game at home in two weeks time.
