Gloucester-Hartpury quartet feature in Wales warm-up defeat in Ireland
Gloucester-Hartpury’s Cerys Hale, Kelsey Jones, Bethan Lewis and Hannah Jones were part of the Wales Women’s squad that were defeated 29-19 by Ireland at Energia Park in Donnybrook on Sunday in a warm-up match for the Six Nations Championship.

Hale and both the Jones’ started the match, with Lewis named amongst the replacements. Kelsey Jones was a try-scorer for Wales.

Ireland defeated Wales comfortably at the same venue last spring, but this game was a far tighter affair with the home team only clinching the game in the final quarter.

Ireland skipper Ciara Griffin powered over from a five metre scrum to open the scoring, before a break from full-back Lauren Delany led to the second try from flanker Anna Caplice.

However, Wales hit back when Gloucester-Hartpury hooker Kelsey Jones touched down after a well-executed lineout drive.

Ireland were quickly back on the front foot though, and Delany was the scorer rather than the provider on this occasion as she stepped past the last defender to send the home team into half-time with a decent 15-7 lead.

But Wales stunned the Irish as they hit back right at the start of the second half, winger Jasmin Joyce finishing off a fine counter-attack. Joyce then added her second after a kick was charged down, Robyn Wilkins converting for a 19-15 lead.

Ireland made a raft of changes and it quickly paid off, Nicole Fowley’s long pass finding fellow replacement Laura Sheehan for Ireland’s fourth try, Fowley adding a fine conversion.

And, with nine minutes remaining, Ireland made the game safe as they forced their way over from a catch and drive.
