Gloucester Rugby hosting events for young female players in February
Rugby union is one of the country’s fastest growing female sports with a 70% increase in participation nationally and, year-on-year, Gloucester Rugby has been campaigning to grow the game for girls.  In the last year alone, Gloucester Rugby has delivered coaching to 2,570 girls.

Delivery has been led from the front by Community Coach, and England and Gloucester-Hartpury Women scrum half, Bianca Blackburn, who has described the delivery in local schools as:

“A valuable opportunity to have an impact on creating and driving momentum needed to increase girls’ participation in rugby across the county.”

The delivery will culminate in a county-wide U13 Girls Festival on Tuesday 11th February at Gordon League RFC, with 14 schools participating - Balcarras, Churchdown, Cleeve, Crypt, Dene Magna, Five Acres, HSFG, John Kyrle, Kingshill, KLB, Pitville, Ribston, Severn Vale and St Peters.

The round robin style tournament will feature 10-a-side games, at eight minutes long with two pools of eight teams, and will focus on participation and giving the girls the opportunity to play some competitive rugby against other schools.

Commenting on the Under 13s festival, Bianca said:

“It is fantastic to be able to host this festival. It is a brilliant opportunity for the girls to put what they have learnt into practise, but more importantly just enjoy playing rugby.”

Local clubs have also been invited to come down and share information about their girls’ teams and how to get involved locally.

Gloucester Rugby are continuing to drive momentum and are taking this initiative one step further, by offering their February Half-Term Girls only Rugby Camp for 10 - 18 year olds, on the 19th of February between 09.00-15.30, at Sir Thomas Rich's Sports Centre.

Led by Terry Fanolua, the Gloucester Rugby and Samoan international, and other professional rugby coaches, this camp is aimed at encouraging young girls into sport, enjoying physical fitness and the game of rugby.

It will provide a professional environment where everyone is welcome to learn core rugby skills, for girls new to the game or any aspiring young player wishing to improve their game.

We would like to encourage anyone with an interest to give it a try!
