Gloucester Rugby learn opponents for 2019-20 Heineken Champions Cup
The draw for the 2019-20 Heineken Champions Cup took place in Lausanne today and Gloucester Rugby have been drawn in pool 5 along with Stade Toulousain, Connacht Rugby and Montpellier Herault Rugby.

The draw means that the Cherry and Whites will take on the current Top 14 champions for the second season in succession. Having played Castres Olympique in 2018-19, Toulouse will visit Kingsholm this season, evoking memories of the famous encounter back in January 2012.

Connacht and Gloucester Rugby are familiar foes having met several times over the years in the European Rugby Challenge Cup, the playoff semi-final which the Cherry and Whites won by 40 points to 32 back in May 2015 being probably the most memorable at Kingsholm, while the quarter-final triumph in Galway in Match 2018 was also a hard-fought encounter.

On the other hand, Montpellier Herault Rugby, coached by Vern Cotter, are not a team that Gloucester Rugby have met in European action before but will be a challenging opponent.

Director of Rugby, David Humphreys commented:

“There are no easy draws in the Heineken Champions Cup, and we’ve been drawn in the same pool as some top teams.

“Toulouse are of course the current top 14 champions, and have returned to the top of the French and European club game this season. They have real quality in their side.

“We’re very familiar with the challenge that Connacht will present having played them so many times in recent seasons. There is never an easy game against them and we expect a couple of very tough encounters.

“Montpellier are another tough French opponent, particularly on their own turf. They have a lot of big names in their squad and a decent European pedigree having won the Challenge Cup in 2016.

“It all points to an incredibly exciting tournament, and everyone at the club is looking forward to the team testing themselves against the best in Europe.”

All three home Heineken Champions Cup Pool Games are included in the 2019-20 Gloucester Rugby Club Membership Packages so, if you have not renewed or purchased one, don’t delay as they are selling fast!

The Gallagher Premiership Fixture draw will take place on 10 July and all home matches are also included in the Club Membership and it remains the best value way to see Gloucester Rugby next season!
