Match Preview – Gloucester Rugby v Leicester Tigers

Match Preview – Gloucester Rugby v Leicester Tigers
Gallagher Premiership is back, and it’s fourth v fifth this weekend, as the Cherry and Whites host Leicester Tigers at Kingsholm Stadium, under the Friday Night Lights (KO 7:45pm)

With the Premiership Rugby Cup yielding a pair of wins, focus is back on the bread and butter of crucial domestic contests, in one of English rugby’s historic clashes.

Here are a number of players to watch this weekend.

Jason Woodward

The fleet-footed back was in sparkling form for the Cherry and Whites last Friday evening, and will want to keep the Tigers defence on their toes with his direct running and creativity.

Dan Cole

The experienced England and Lion has seen Tigers’ set piece as one of the best in the competition, and he has been at the top of the game for a number of years. Solid in the scrum and a nuisance around the park, Cole will be key for the visiting Tigers this weekend in a fascinating set piece battle.

Last Time Out

Gloucester Rugby 14-12 Northampton Saints

Leicester Tigers 16-18 Sale Sharks

Last Time We Met

Putting an end to Leicester’s aforementioned winning run, Gloucester emerged with a hard-fought 24-17 victory last time these two met.

They had Henry Trinder to thank – the centre’s two first-half tries helping the Cherry and Whites level things in an even first-half.

Gloucester had their chance to steal a march on their opponents in the second half when Logovi’i Mulipola was sin-binned. A Billy Twelvetrees penalty followed, with a Matt Scott try proving decisive for the hosts on the day.

Head To Head

This is a fixture that dates back more than two decades, with the Premiership giants Leicester traditionally seeing the best of it.

Before February of this year, the Tigers had enjoyed a seven-match win-streak over Gloucester, but make no mistake, this is a fixture that tends to deliver entertainment of the highest order.

A record-breaking 41-41 draw at Welford Road in 2011 is the highlight in an outstanding history of match-ups, so expect points in this one.
