Stephen Varney “can’t wait” for Perpignan start

Gloucester Rugby host Perpignan in the European Challenge Cup on Saturday and ahead of the game Stephen Varney previewed the fixture.

On his Six Nations call up

“I’m very privileged to be in the squad and I’m really excited to go there and hopefully play well for Italy. Hopefully we can do well in the Six Nations.

“I’m buzzing for the fans to return and I’ve never played in front of more than 40,000 people so to be able to play at the Principality and in France as well, in front of so many people, it will be a great experience.”

On Perpignan

“We’ve prepped well this week. The focus has been on us but we expect them to bring an expansive game and we predict that they will chuck the ball around a bit. We’re focused on ourselves but we’re really looking forward to being back at Kingsholm in front of a full crowd.

“Playing in Europe is very exciting and hosting French teams is fun and I’m really looking forward to it.”

On the opportunity to start

“I’m really looking forward to it. It’s been tough this year with the competition with Ben Meehan and Charlie Chapman, they’ve been playing really well so competition wise it’s been tough but I’m really looking forward to getting my start.”

On being back at Kingsholm

“It doesn’t get much better. Especially after the warmup, running past the Shed. It’s unbelievable and I can’t wait.”
