Under 18s team confirmed for Premiership Rugby Academy Final
Gloucester Rugby Under 18s bring the curtain down on their Premiership Rugby Academy campaign with the Final against Leicester Tigers at Allianz Park on Sunday (KO 4pm)

After topping a highly competitive Southern Conference, the exciting group of Cherry and Whites will go for the title in a re-run of last season’s final against a Tigers side full of confidence after an unbeaten campaign.

It’s the third time in four seasons that the Cherry and Whites have been involved in the showpiece game on finals day, and this group will be looking to be the first to lift the title.

Age group international duo Stephen Varney and George Barton are reunited at half back, with Tommy Mathews and Isaac Marsh teaming up in midfield, with Louis Rees-Zammit, a hat trick scorer in the last two games, linking up with Louis Hillman-Cooper and Brooke Turner in the back three.

Up front, Harry Fry, Ethan Hunt and Jenson Boughton will be set for the forward battle, whilst captain Joe Howard reverts to the second row alongside Archie Benson, with Jack Clement, Josh Gray and Harry Taylor forming a dangerous back row trio.

Junior Academy Manager Alex Guest is excited for the group to round off their campaign, and the Finals Day experience.

“We’ll need to start with a bang. Start is going to be key for us to set the tone of the final but as we’ve shown we’re also strong finishers in these games.

“We have some exciting young players within the squad, 14 of the squad starting in the DPP programme, and to go all through that to play in this fixture, which is the pinnacle of U18 rugby.

“Not only that, it’s an excellent opportunity to cap off a season that has seen this group play some outstanding rugby against some of the best Academy sides in Britain taking on Leinster, Scarlets and Ospreys throughout the year.

“11 of the group have been announced in International development camps so overall the group is on a high.”

Ahead of the trip to Allianz Park on Sunday, the group have prepared well for the task ahead, and Guest reveals that selection for the final game has been a hugely tough one with plenty of players contributing to a successful campaign to date.

“We’ve had a good training week, it has been tough for the boys but also tough for the coaching team. Selection has been hard because the boys have been playing well but also training hard. Something we could never criticise this group on is their commitment and dedication to improving.

“The majority of this group have been with the Club since they were 13 or 14 years old in the Developing Player Programme. No journey through the pathway is straight forward and these boys as individuals have had their ups and downs. As a group and as 23 individuals, but not forgetting those who missed out of selection, this will be a fitting way for them to finish the season.

“Whatever happens on Sunday we know the boys will give their all and we couldn’t be prouder of this group. How they’ve developed over the years and grown as a group is fantastic.”
