Two more local youngsters added to Senior Academy
Gloucester Rugby continue to build the future, today announcing a further two more players who have been offered Senior Academy deals.

Dean Close students, Matty Jones and Freddie Thomas, become the latest local talent to link up with the Gloucester Rugby Senior Academy on professional contracts, after notable performances for both Dean Close and the Junior Academy.

Matty Jones, described as a “typical terrier of a 9”, by Head of Academy, Peter Walton, has enjoyed a progressive season of Rugby, with his performances earning him a call-up to the England U18 set-up. Capable of playing across the backline, Jones is now looking forward to enhancing his skills alongside the senior scrum-halves at Gloucester Rugby having been a member of the academy set-up since U13.

Versatile forward, Freddie Thomas grew up playing for Bredon Rugby Club, and has spent his entire school career at Dean Close. Thomas’ ability to beat defenders in attack, and resolute defending has made him a stand-out performer, not to mention his adaptability to play lock, blindside or No.8

Andrew Stanley, Director of Rugby at Dean Close, is exceptionally proud of the pair:

“This has been an ambition for the pair of them from very young ages, and for them to have gained this reward has certainly meant that all their hard work and commitment has been justified.  They have been fantastic leaders at school, and in their roles as 1st XV co-captains they have been at the heart of our continued development not only for the 1st XV but also for the younger boys' who rightly see them as role models.

“We are delighted to see that they have achieved their ambition after contributing so much, and we look forward to them being reunited with our other Old Decanians currently at Gloucester Rugby in Lloyd Evans, Tom Seabrook, George Barton, Josh Gray and Archie Benson.”

Peter Walton, Head of Academy at Gloucester Rugby added:

“It’s a pleasure to offer Matt and Freddie their first contracts which I hope will be the first of many for Gloucester Rugby.

“Matt has had a very good season for school and club, with this he was picked in both England U18s squads. Matt has played in many positions across the backline but concentrating on the scrum Half position now. Matt is a typical terrier of a 9 which I like to see and believe with time he will progress.

“Freddie seems to have the ability to beat defends in tight areas and create holes for other to run through. In defence, he is like a good old fashion tackler, getting the player down and ball back effectively. I’m really looking forward to having him in the Academy.

Matt and Freddie have been at Dean Close school where they have both worked hard with their studies and got the balance right with education and sport.”

The exciting youngsters will join up full-time with the Academy, with both looking to take on an online course to further their education at the same time.
